Race Driver Schools

Oregon Region Club Racing Driver Schools (yes, "schools" plural)

  • If you do not hold a qualified racing license, you must attend two race driver schools to race with SCCA. One school may be waived if you have qualifying prior race experience.

  • Oregon Region SCCA is hosting our first school on March 5-6 in conjunction with the season opening regional race March 6-7. This school is designed to take a beginner thru to a novice competition license which enables the holder to enter regional races.  Cost of this school is $310.

  • In 2010, Oregon Region SCCA has developed a one-day Novice Licensing program.  Dubbed the FasTEST Licensing Program, it runs at Portland International Raceway in conjunction with certain scheduled Pro Drive Test Days.  This year the test days are April 16 and August 6, just before Oregon Regional races.  The program is designed for drivers who cannot attend the March SCCA school or who may need additional time beyond March for skills development, or due to mechanical issues in March preventing their completion.  It is not for completely inexperienced drivers.  These drivers may have raced in other series; they may have attended other racing schools; they may have participated in ICSCC Driving Schools, or have been eligible to participate in an ICSCC novice racing program.  Drivers may qualify via high performance driving events, or a combination of all these.

  • Unlike the March SCCA school, the FasTEST program is not for the first timer; prior experience is required.  Drivers must be prepared to document their driving experience to the SCCA to be accepted into the FasTEST licensing program.  Cost for the FasTEST school is $310 for the day, the same as for the March school.  Participants must also register for and pay the Pro Drive Test Day fee of $400 separately.

  • Everything still applies to the person who takes the FasTEST approach-- a recent physical is needed, novice permit applied for and received, full driver safety gear, and car prepared to GCR specs.  This is a racing school; you will be on track with race-prepared cars testing for the weekend race.

  • Oregon Region worked hard with the SCCA National office to get this set up.  The biggest hurdle in putting on a Driver School is track and facilities costs.  By doing this in the context of a Pro Drive Test Day, SCCA costs are minimized to only insurance and sanction fees.  That said, we still figure we need about 4 students to make this break even, but realistically we can put this on for even 2-3 students signed up.

  • We hope this will give opportunities to those that just need one more school and a little more track time to get that license, and missed out on March.

  • You must provide the race car you will drive, and it must pass technical inspection. Cars are available for rent from a few sources. You must also provide your own driver's gear.

  • You can sign up for any of the SCCA Driver Schools by contacting the Oregon Region office at 503-224-9469.
