In Memoriam-Gary Blackman

Gary Blackman

By Howard Allen

Gary Blackman was the Competition Manager when I schooled with this region in 1990. He was one of my heroes and role models. Gary was always there for me, and for many others. When I had a need or a question, I just looked for the sombrero and I got the answers. Fran and Gary Blackman have been a big part of the many reasons, over the years, that this region ranks among the best in the country. Gary never hesitated to speak up when he felt the Region had made a misstep. Gary was also one of the driving forces in the Northwest to keep the Mini part of the SCCA heritage alive.

Gary Blackman was a mentor to me, and a good friend. I met Gary and Fran before I moved up here, when I was just coming up to enjoy the great racing scene.

Gary knew as much about British sports cars as anyone I know and was always ready to share his knowledge and experience with me. Somehow, every time I'd be struggling in the paddock, Gary would stroll over, look at what I was doing, and ask some simple question like "Have you frobbed the freemostat?" - and of course that would be just what I hadn't done. To me, Gary will always stand for Doing It Right.

Gary was also instrumental in designing and implementing the trailer hitch on my minibike. He was a good friend, a great racer, and the kind of guy that makes this club great.
