TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 2, 2018) -- It was a fantastic three days of competition Oct. 19-21 at Sonoma Raceway in California during the 2018 SCCA® National Championship Runoffs®.

For those who couldn’t make it to the track or missed the live online broadcast of races, it’s now possible to catch up on all the action with free 2018 Runoffs race videos available for viewing at SCCA.com.
Later this year, certain 2018 Runoffs races will also air on CBS Sports Network.

With nearly 500 entries across 28 different car classes, this year’s 24 events featured exciting competition, close racing throughout the fields, a handful of surprises and some great storylines.
Video coverage, presented by Mazda, was again anchored by Greg Creamer with guests Ryan Myrehn (SportsCar365 writer), Tom O’Gorman (pro driver), Heyward Wagner (pit reporter), Andy Hollis and Larry MacLeod (SCCA Solo Nationals announcers) providing additional insight and commentary.

The SCCA National Championship Runoffs has evolved into what is now commonly agreed to be the pinnacle of American motorsports.

Since 1964, the SCCA has crowned Road Racing’s National Champions at the winner-take-all, single race Runoffs format through dozens of separate races over three days.
As host of the 55th Runoffs, Sonoma Raceway became only the third California track to host SCCA’s National Championship, joining Riverside International Raceway and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca.

2018 Super Tour Champions Announced

11/25/2018

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 12, 2018) -- While the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour 2019 schedule has already been announced, let us take a moment before moving forward to fête the 2018 Hoosier Super Tour point champions from across 28 different classes.

One standout this year is driver Robeson Clay Russell, the 2018 Hoosier Super Tour point champion in Spec Racer Ford Gen3 (SRF3). He also earned the SCCA U.S. Majors Tour® Southeast Conference SRF3 championship, took the SRF3 Tire Rack Pole Award at the 2018 National Championship, and brought home a Runoffs® win at Sonoma Raceway in his Angry Llama/SVN/Comprent Motorsports SRF3 racecar. As such, Russell becomes the sole competitor in 2018 to earn an SCCA Road Racing Super Sweep award.

There were several tight finishes in the Hoosier Super Tour point championship this year. The Formula Enterprises 2 battle came down to a tie, with Thomas W. Burt and Rhett Barkau both earning 137 points. However, Burt and his Bulldog Motorsport SCCA FE2 Mazda claimed the point championship based on his fifth-place finish at the Runoffs as compared to the eighth-place finish of Barkau.

The point championship battle was nearly as close in the Formula F (FF) class. There, David Livingston Jr., in a Spectrum 14H, eked out a win by one point over Yuven Sundaramoorthy’s Mygale. Jonathon Kotyk, the 2018 FF Runoffs winner who also drives a Mygale, finished third in the point championship only three points off Livingston.

Four points were the deciding factor in two Hoosier Super Tour class point championships. The Formula 1000 point champion in 2018 is Gary Hickman in his Edge Engineering Phoenix F1K.12 Suzuki. Hickman compiled 75 points as compared to the 71 points of Jeremy Hill, in a Photon VD07, and the JDR F1000 of Nicholas Vardis. And in Super Touring® Under (STU), Kevin Koelemeyer and his OPM/HPD/G-Loc/Hoosier Honda Civic grabbed the Hoosier Super Tour point championship by four points over Runoffs STU winner Kevin Boehm, also in a Honda Civic.

Two other close point championships to note occurred in the Touring 4 (T4) and Spec Miata (SM) classes. The T4 point championship went to the Hoosier Mazda RX-8 of Ross Murray who amassed five more points than runner-up Gresham Wagner driving a Mazda MX-5. And in SM it’s Chris Haldeman, in his X-Factor Racing/Sunoco/G-Loc Mazda Miata, who claimed the Hoosier Super Tour point championship by eight points over Michael Carter.

Only the top six regular-season finishes counted toward a driver’s 2018 point total. Points were also awarded for a seventh and final race, the Runoffs. For each race, points were awarded to the top 20 finishers in each class. Winners earned 25 points, and 21 points went to second. Points were then doled out to others starting with 18 and descending to a single point for the 20th finisher.
Below is a rundown of the 2018 Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour point champions. A full accounting of the standings can be viewed at the Hoosier Super Tour points webpage. Congratulations to one and all for a fantastic effort this season.

2019 Majors and Super Tour Reserved Numbers

11/25/2018

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 14, 2018) -- Racers intending to compete in the 2019 SCCA U.S. Majors Tour® or Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA® Super Tour can now apply online for Series Registration at MotorsportReg.com.

Those paying the $50 Series Registration fee can reserve a single or two-digit number in a Conference of their choosing. The same number can also be reserved, if available, in other Conferences for an additional $50 per Conference. Per GCR section 9.3.28.a, the numeral “1” shall be exclusively reserved for current National Champions in each class for National events. A Series Registration fee of $150 allows competitors to register a three-digit number, with the leading digit required to be “1”, for all Conferences.

Racers with a 2018 U.S. Majors Tour series registration will have until November 21 at 9 a.m. Central Time to reserve the same number within a Conference for the coming year. At that time, unreserved numbers will be released back into the general pool.

Only SCCA Full Competition and SCCA Pro Racing License holders may register for the U.S. Majors Tour or Hoosier Super Tour series. Registration allows drivers to prepare number graphics for their cars that will be good for the 2019 season. Registered participants can receive a special U.S. Majors Tour hard card, but only if they have a headshot photo associated with their SCCA member profile. Those who do not have a headshot photo on file can submit a picture via email to the SCCA Membership Department at membership@scca.com. Registrants will also receive series decals for car placement prior to events, as well as a discount coupon on merchandise at www.sccagear.com.

Reserved numbers will be honored until two weeks prior to an event. In-Conference reserved numbers will be given priority over out-of-conference reserved numbers for event registration. In the case of a dual-conference event, any duplicate reserved number requests will be resolved by earliest event registration. The word “reserved” does not mean “permanent.” If class run groups for any event differ from a norm, then number assignments for that event will give preference to the in-conference drivers who register first, then further duplicate requests will be resolved by earliest event registration. The reserved number program does NOT apply to the SCCA Runoffs.

Both the U.S. Majors Tour and Hoosier Super Tour serve as paths to the 2019 SCCA National Championship Runoffs® being held this year at VIRginia International Raceway in Alton, Virginia. Visit www.scca.com for more information.

2019 Super Tour Schedule Announced

11/25/2018

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 1, 2018) -- The haulers and tow vehicles have barely made it home from this year’s Runoffs at Sonoma Raceway, but it’s already time to look ahead to the 2019 Summit Racing Equipment SCCA® Road Racing season and the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour. Next year, the Hoosier Super Tour features 11 events beginning in January and closing out in July. The lineup of tracks includes old favorites along with a couple venues new to the series.

Once again in 2019, the Hoosier Super Tour will open at Sebring International Raceway in Florida before a February visit to Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. In March, the Hoosier Super Tour makes its first visit to Georgia’s recently-renamed Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta since the series re-launched in 2017, then it’s off to Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Oklahoma.

April will see the Hoosier Super Tour make its annual stop at VIRginia International Raceway. Participation is expected to be very high that weekend as VIR is home to the 2019 SCCA® Runoffs® taking place in October, so plenty of competitors will use that three-day event as a warmup for the National Championship. After VIR, Hoosier Super Tour action heads west with stops at California’s Buttonwillow Raceway Park and Portland International Raceway in Oregon.

Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course is again on the Hoosier Super Tour this year, as well as the WeatherTech Chicago Region June Sprints at Road America in Wisconsin. The month of June closes out with racing at Watkins Glen International in New York. The final race weekend on the schedule then takes place in July on the West Coast at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, also a first-time location for the Hoosier Super Tour.

As always, the calendar is subject to change, but dates for the exciting 2019 Hoosier SCCA Super Tour are currently as follows:

- January 11-13: Sebring International Raceway; Sebring, Florida
(Southeast Conf., Central Florida Region)

- February 8-10: Circuit of the Americas; Austin, Texas
(Southern Conf., Lone Star Region/Southwest Division)

- March 15-17: Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta; Braselton, Georgia
(Southeast Conf., Southeast Division)

- March 30-31: Hallett Motor Racing Circuit; Jennings, Oklahoma
(Mid-States Conf./Southern Conf.; Ark Valley Race Group)

- April 12-14: VIRginia International Raceway; Alton, Virginia
(Northeast Conf./Southeast Conf., North Carolina Region)

- April 26-28: Buttonwillow Raceway Park; Buttonwillow, California
(Western Conf., Cal Club Region)

- May 17-19: Portland International Raceway; Portland, Oregon
(Western Conf., Oregon Region)

- May 31-June 2 (tentative date): Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course; Lexington, Ohio
(Northern Conf., Ohio Valley Region)

- June 14-16: Road America - WeatherTech Chicago Region June Sprints; Plymouth, Wis.
(Northern Conf., Chicago Region)

- June 21-23: Watkins Glen International; Watkins Glen, New York
(Northeast Conf., Glen Region)

- July 26-28: WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca; Salinas, California
(Western Conf., San Francisco Region)

Hoosier Super Tour venues are selected based on various attributes. Some have decades of history with a record book featuring the biggest names in all of motorsport. Other sites are top “pro” tracks offering the best quality racing surface and amenities. And certain tracks were selected because they are the best “club” courses in the country, where challenging layouts are matched with warm hospitality and a “family feel” to the paddock area.

According to Deanna Flanagan, SCCA’s Director of Road Racing, “We have done some fine-tuning on this year’s schedule based on participant feedback, including adding a week between the Hallett and VIR races. Additionally, we’ve added to the schedule two world-class facilities in Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta and WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca—each of which has a rich history with SCCA in Regional activities and as past Runoffs hosts. We anticipate another exciting Hoosier Super Tour season and, as always, thank our host SCCA Regions for putting on such great events.”

Beyond the venues, the Hoosier Super Tour offers a heightened experience for both competitors and race fans. Weekends include segmented timing and scoring, a service simply unavailable at most amateur motorsports events. The series also boasts a dedicated “Super Tour Radio presented by Hoosier Racing Tire” team of announcers capable of providing consistent insight and entertainment heard at tracks or online at SCCA.com.
Dedicated staffing with a series race director, administrator and technical inspector working in conjunction with local event personnel is an additional feature of the Hoosier Super Tour. Up to two static cameras broadcast races live online at SCCA.com, and onsite SCCA public relations staff provide weekend media coverage. Hoosier Super Tour dates also have enhanced weekend social activities.

The Hoosier Super Tour serves as the Summit Racing Equipment SCCA Road Racing’s nationwide point championship. The point structure remains the same as previous years with the best six Hoosier Super Tour races, plus a Runoffs finish, going toward identifying class champions. Point totals for the Hoosier Super Tour are managed by SCCA national office staff and can be viewed at SCCA.com.

Only SCCA Full Competition and SCCA Pro Racing License holders may register to compete at Hoosier Super Tour events. The Hoosier Super Tour also serves as a path to the 2019 SCCA National Championship Runoffs® being held Oct. 8-13 at VIRginia International Raceway.

Oregon Region's 2018 Special Award Winners

11/25/2018

By Kristen Moore

THANK YOU to all our drivers and workers for helping make the 2018 road racing season a success!

The Oregon Region Board of Directors announced the 2018 Driver and Perpetual awards at the November BOD meeting.
We were pleased to see many drivers and workers join us to accept their award, share stories and enjoy dinner at Buster’s Barbeque.

Congratulations to the following Oregon Region driver and perpetual award winners. We’ve collected a few testimonials about our winners.

Scott Vondrachek, Novice Driver of the Year, SM #95

“I raced with Scott all season. He always came to the track with a great attitude and was always a pleasure to race with on track. With Scott it is more about the friendship comradery than it is about winning.

He has been one of the most enjoyable competitors to be around and will be a great asset to OR SCCA and the Spec Miata group.” – Tim Ferrick

“Scott “Lightning McVee” Vondrachek. I have known Scott for ten years and I will never forget the time I gave him a ride in a race car around PIR. He was giggling like a little girl and he vowed that day that he would someday be racing with us in Spec Miata.

Over the years he has come to all the races and been a big fan while he waited for the time to be right for him to get a race car.  Finally, he was able to make it happen this year.

A dream come true for him and we welcomed him into the fold. To see Scott at the track is like seeing a little kid that is just excited to be there!

Scott has worked hard to improve his game over the season and made some big improvements. We all look forward to seeing him progress next year. Scott is the perfect choice for “Rookie of the Year”

PS Scotty drives a red #95 just like Lightning McQueen from the movie Cars. Hence the “Lightning McVee” nickname. Rumor has it he raced a whole weekend sitting on a Lightning McQueen model. Ask him about it sometime.” –Will Schrader

JD Barnum, Regional Driver of the Year, SRF3 #28

JD won the SRF3 Oregon Regional Championship for 2018, the 2016 SRF Oregon Regional Championship and SRF NORPAC championship.

JD holds 3 of the 4 track records in SRF. JD has created a “family first” racing team: He makes sure everyone is having fun. It is all about family!
Tony Opheim, National Driver of the Year, FA #31

Tony has supported our regional race program for the past 4 years, attending almost every race we held.  In 2018 Tony concentrated on qualifying for the Runoffs, attending mostly Majors on the west coast.  This year, Tony represented Oregon Region at the National Runoffs at Sonoma and took second place in Formula Atlantic.

Brad McAllister, Pro Driver of the Year, TA2 #24
Brad, an Oregon Region member and supporter, has been running the competitive Trans Am West Series and this year finished 4th in the points with a win at the season finale at CoTA.

Jason Brassfield, Most Inspirational Driver of the Year, SM #14

“Jason “Boom Boom” Brassfield. I met Jason about 8 years ago when I had the privilege of being his instructor in a Spec Miata that he built on a budget. Jason is a second-generation volunteer race worker and he decided to make the jump into a race car. I am so glad he did as we need more guys like him in racing. I remember being impressed with his enthusiasm and his fantastic attitude.

This guy is always smiling and ready to help a fellow racer.
Nothing has changed about his attitude and approach to racing. He was a great student and has continued to improve his car and his driving every year. We have traveled to races, pitted together, worked on cars and eaten together. That’s what Club Racing is all about. It was one of the best moments of the year for me to be able to watch Jason win his very first race this last August. All his hard work and dedication paid off when he got that checkered flag.

Very fitting that he would be chosen as the “Inspirational Driver” for 2018!!! Jason got the name “Boom Boom” after blowing a motor big time complete with flames and all. His graceful exit from the car and subsequent dive over the tire wall has been described as “Driver Ballet”. – Will Schrader

John Grant, Crew Person of the Year, Rhom Innovations

“John has always been a great contributor in the paddock for years, always willing to help other teams, extremely knowledgeable. This year he has been amazing. Single handed he has been hauling my TA2/GT2 Mustang to Texas all over California and Oregon keeping it in one piece even in 100 plus degree days he is an animal. While many Trans Am teams have several crew members, John has done it all and he has done it well. We will showcase his fine work at the runoffs this year as well, hoping for a top finish based on podium finishes at all the Majors events we have done and good TA2 results.” – Brad McAllister

Will Schrader, Norton Gaston Award

“Will heads up the Spec Miata tour and personally calls every Spec Miata driver before every race to encourage them to sign up. He also spends endless hours on the phone diagnosing problems, instructing drivers, giving advice on where and how to get their cars in top shape.  He’s a huge asset to the Spec Miata community.  After a big wreck a couple of weeks ago he went to other drivers houses and fixed their cars, so they could race the next day. That’s the kind of guy he is.”  – Ken Sutherland

“Will embodies the attitude of gentlemen competitor. Always there and ready to help fellow racers, never looks to gain a spot with a cheap shot or risky pass.  He truly encourages friendly and safe competition over everything else.” – Tim Ferrick

Rio Rios, Norton Gaston Award

“Rio is the Solo president this year and is trying very, very hard to revitalize the membership and bring in new racers. His every focus is on improving the sport in Oregon. He keeps the membership informed of his every idea and intention. He is always on the lookout for some new way to increase participation and interest. He is supportive of those who bring him ideas. He is innovative in many ways and looks for ways to improve what we already have as a solo community.
He recently instituted having some of our monthly meetings at solo events rather than away from the track during the midweek. This way he gets input from both those who attend the meetings and those who participate in the sport who many times are not active meeting attendees. He could have left things as they are, but he decided to innovate to get more feedback. He is highly encouraging of women participating in the sport. He really takes charge and always follows up his projects.” – David Russell

Patrik Lundin, Region Worker of the Year

“No one has impressed me more than Patrik Lundin, Chief of Flags. He really outshined above all others, especially with his never-ending responses to continually changing requirements, locations & availability for F&C personnel at Grand Prix of Portland IndyCar! Patrik consistently excels at distributing all forms of event information and set a high bar preceding and during our most challenging 2018 event. For these and many other reasons, Patrik not only deserves to represent Oregon Region SCCA as Region Worker of the Year but should be National Flags Worker of the Year as well!” – Bob Smethers

Aaron Bucci, Regional Executive Appreciation
“Aaron was chosen for the 2018 RE award because of his continuous efforts and dedication to SCCA.  He has been an active member for more than 6 years and for the last 3 years has been very involved with our super successful TNIA program.

You can always find Aaron in the paddock with a smile on his face and willing to talk with anyone.

Promoting our club and encouraging TNIA participants to joining and become an active member of Oregon SCCA.  Whether as a volunteer or racer he wants to share his love and enjoyment for auto sports with everyone in the paddock.

Aaron is committed to the growth for the Oregon region and constantly looking for ways to improve members experiences and happily assists with the implementation of those ideas.  If you see Aaron in the pits, say thanks to him for his dedication to OR SCCA.Thank you to Sandra Ferrick for arranging the awards. This year, each driver and perpetual award winner received a Dakine duffle bag with the Oregon Region SCCA logo stitched on the bag personally by Sandra!” – Tim Ferrick
