TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 17, 2018) -- B-Spec, B Street, American Sedan, Classic American Muscle, Prepared All-Wheel Drive, E Street Prepared, GT-1, Touring 1 .... Admittedly, participation options within the Sports Car Club of America® can be varied, confusing and daunting for newcomers. Be it road racing, autocross, RallyCross®, RoadRally or other SCCA® activity, the immense complexity of motorsports itself sometimes acts as a barrier to entry.
But thanks to support from Hoosier Racing Tire, the SCCA is producing the Hoosier Shop Manual series -- a set of videos taking a quick look at some of the ways Club members have fun with cars. Each short video provides a glimpse into a competition activity and a specific way to get involved. Videos will be rolled out early in 2018 and can be viewed at SCCA.com.
Mike Cobb, SCCA President and CEO, said the videos are being created to help automotive enthusiasts gain a better grasp of the SCCA member experience. The first set of videos focus on specific car classes across several Club. In the future, the Hoosier Shop Manual series also hopes to explore various volunteer specialties.
"We want SCCA Regions to use these Hoosier Shop Manual videos as a tool for explaining just what this Club is all about and what we offer to those who want to have fun with cars," Cobb said. "I'm sure many current Club members have experienced a time when they've tried to explain the SCCA lifestyle to someone outside the Club and it just becomes a little confusing. With these videos, regions now have an online destination where prospective members can learn more from those actually taking part in specific SCCA motorsport pursuits."
The first Hoosier Shop Manual video is now available for viewing here and focuses on Beth Aquilante and her SCCA road racing American Sedan Camaro. Check back to SCCA.comfrequently as new videos are uploaded in the coming months.
TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 4, 2018) -- Beginning immediately, the Sports Car Club of America® has hired Chris Robbins as the new Director of Region Development. Robbins will now lead both the Region Development and Member Services departments.
In his new role, Robbins will focus on helping SCCA® regions grow by developing and deploying an effective mix of membership acquisition, membership service and training, and program creation as part of an overall development plan for regions. He will work closely with staff, regional leadership and member services to provide regions with effective growth strategies.
Robbins worked at Southwest Airlines for more than two decades. From 2011 until his retirement in 2017, he served as a Customer Service Senior Manager, as well as a Curriculum Development Senior Manager and Senior Program Lead at Southwest Airlines University. He was part of the original leadership team focused on centralizing training for Southwest Airlines, provided leadership for a team of curriculum designers and developers, and managed customer service/hospitality training for over 54,000 employees. Additionally, Robbins has been a guest speaker at several SCCA National Conventions.
"The SCCA has been part of my life since childhood, attending SCCA events in Ponca City and Salina with my dad," Robbins said. "It's now an honor to join the staff of one of the most recognized brands in motorsports to actively engage Region Leadership, Members, Staff and Stakeholders in service of growing SCCA participation and membership."
Joining the SCCA in 2007, Robbins is a member of the Texas Region and served from 2012 to 2014 as the Region's Membership Chair where he produced a quarterly newsletter, fielded questions about SCCA membership and Texas Region activities, and acted as Region ambassador at autocross, road racing and car show events. He is an active autocrosser who also participates in Club Trials.

TOPEKA, Kan. (Jan. 3, 2018) -- Track Night in America Driven by Tire Rack has experienced incredible growth in its first three years. In 2017 alone, the initiative saw nearly 7,500 drivers get out on a racecourse through 119 events at 30 tracks around the country. Designed to grow the SCCA® at all levels, the program is now investing directly in regions with creation of a special Track Night in America grant.
In 2018, the Track Night Region Development Grant is funded with $50,000 to be distributed to regions for the purposes of training, equipment upgrades, marketing, or offsetting costs of pilot events. Heyward Wagner, SCCA's Director of Marketing and Experiential Programs, said the funds do NOT need to be used for Track Night activities. The monies are being offered to support any region development activity across the board.
"SCCA Track Night in America Driven by Tire Rack has become an extremely successful product for the Club," Wagner noted. "The program has engaged motorsport enthusiasts of all ages, brought new members to the Club, and has proven financially viable. It's important to now give back to regions with fiscal support so they can best position themselves to be able to give these new members the best possible SCCA regional experience."
Grant applications must be submitted online at https://www.scca.com/pages/scca-region-development-grants. Submissions are due no later than January 31, 2018. Grant requests will be reviewed by a five-person committee made up of SCCA Board of Directors members and National Staff. Submissions will be judged on both merit and need. If all funds are not distributed in the first round, a second submission window will be opened until March 1, 2018.
In evaluating a grant, the selection committee will give the most attention and focus to projects that are innovative or demonstrate a need, are backed by a project management plan, and will have a positive impact on a Region or the Club as a whole. Submissions should include: Goal/Purpose, Anticipated Result, Project Timeline, Project Budget and Amount of Grant Request. Applications without a realistic and cost-effective budget will not receive consideration.
